Insurance: A Boon to the Bereaved Family PDF Print E-mail
Link_16th_Dec09_InsuranceBigMrs Shrabani Rath was a member of BISWA SHG Jagadhatri. She took up this membership on 03.09.2007. In the meantime, she had borrowed a loan of Rs. 3,194/- from her group and was paying back it regularly. She was selected to be enrolled in various insurance schemes of BISWA on 20.06.08. After some insisting persuasion by concerned staff members; she enrolled herself for all the 3 Insurance schemes managed by BISWA, i.e. JBY (Janashree Bima Yojana) of Life Insurance Corporation of India, Health and Assets Insurance by Oriental Insurance Company Limited. She nominated Shri Khirod Ch. Panda, her husband in these insurance schemes. Unfortunately, Shrabani expired on 27.01.09. The outstanding amount of Rs.653/- was paid by her father after her death to facilitate the claims with insurance companies. Mr. Panda consulted ‘BISWA’ District Office at Balasore for the procedure to settle the claims. As advised, he collected all the relevant documents and submitted at the Insurance Department at Head Office via District Office. After proper scrutiny of the claim documents; these were forwarded to the respective Insurance Companies for further action. It was easy for him as the relevant documents were kept in safe custody at home by Shrabani.Finally a sum of Rs.1, 50,000/- was paid by the insurance companies against the claims made before them. Mr. Panda received the 3 claim cheques which included Rs.75, 000/- for JBY, Rs.50, 000/- for Assets and Rs. 25,000/- towards Health Insurance. The cheques were handed over to him in a special function organised at Bahanaga Branch Office premises on 12.10.09. About 250 Members from 30 SHGs participated in the meeting. In the meeting, Mr. Trilochan Mishra, SBM LIC Sambalpur was the Chief Guest. Mrs. Mamata Mishra, Deputy Manager (Life Insurance), BISWA Head Office, Mrs. Namita Mallick, DC, BISWA - Balasore District ,Mr. Iswar Chandra Sethi,  ADC,  Bahanaga, and the 3 Area Managers, Mr. Abhimanyu Mallik, Mr. Sitaram Jena and Mr. Ramakanta Sethi, were present in the meeting.

The officials explained the gathered members about the importance and benefits of insurance customised for them. They explained the appropriate procedure for the settlement of various claims. In this connection; Mr.T.Mishra advised the SHG members to keep the documents in their safe custody as it would facilitate the claim procedure. Apart from this, they emphasized on timely renewal of insurance policies to get proper benefit of the schemes. Mr. Panda said that nothing can substitute the human loss, but some financial compensation may be helpful to the bereaved family. He praised ‘BISWA’ for its initiatives to take up insurance as a great social security measure of the Organisation. The money received from the claims will be of great help to the bereaved family, which cannot be described in words. He requested the SHG members not to hesitate in enrolling themselves in the various Insurance schemes of ‘BISWA’, as it in their interest.
