Other member of the Jury are Prof Dr. Sudhakar Panda and eminent economist of high repute and the Chairman of Orissa state Finance Commission, Dr Pratibha Ray , eminent literatiour and Gyanaphita Awardee and others. Out nominated 10 NGOs in Orissa BISWA is selected as the Best for its strategies adopted for poverty alleviations, reduction of hunger and deprivation among women and children in India. BISWA now operates in 14 Indian states and more intensively in Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. It has aimed to reduce at least 20 % of Orissa’s poverty by its won initiatives. BISWA targets to achieve MDG goals in at least in 20000 villages, it will cerate 1 million jobs and 2 million toilets and 100 % literate Women SHG members by March 2011. It has now set up 42000 SHGs and reaching out to 13 lakh poor families in Orissa with its services like basic health, primary education, nutritional supports to children and women, toilets and drinking waters, micro credit, micro insurance, micro enterprises and micro marketing .
BISWA has set up a full-fledged research and innovation centers called BISWA Research and Innovation Center (BRIC) at Bhubaneswar which takes most emerging issues like climate change, low cost eco habitats, urban poverty and issues of elementary education and alternatives livelihoods for the poor families. The CM of Orissa Mr Pattnaik has appreciated the efforts of BISWA in the above areas and congratulated for its good works that it is doing for the state of Orissa and poor people of state. On receiving the Think Orissa leadership award for 2009 on the best NGO category Mr. Khirod Chandra Malick, Chairman of BISWA said that , BISWA has already received more than 104 national and international appreciations from most prestigious government and UN departments credible rating agencies . but the Think Orissa Leadership Award in the best NGO category by CM of Orissa encourages BISWA family to do more for the state of Orissa. Mr Malick is taking serious interest on Youth empowerment and microfinance to curtail with growing extremism, hunger and un-employment in the state of Orissa.
